Hens venture out

Merry Christmas eve! It's still snowing... Day 11!!! Another two inches has accumulated onto the two feet we already had.

I was so surprised to see Raven outside in the chicken run yesterday morning that I grabbed my camera while still in my p.j's, shoved my bare feet into gardening boots sitting by the back door and trudged out through two feet of snow to snap a few pictures. No one else was very interested in venturing out of the coop, so I lured them with cracked corn... one of their favorite treats. Wynonna was the only one who came completely out of the run to gobble up the goodies.

Brave girls! They should have signs around their necks saying "Will pose for food"! I love your hens' names. Wynonna kills me! Do you have a Naomi, too?

Your snow looks so pretty! But it sure makes it more difficult to be a chicken farmer, doesn't it? We've only had a dusting of snow so far this year.

Blessings to you and your family! I hope you have a wonderful Christmas.

XOXOXO
Susan

Hi Susan, Merry Christmas! Yes, I've definitely learned about the difficulties of having chickens lately, but the cold weather seems to have made my two skittish hens more friendly. Wynonna used to run away from me, now she greets me each morning when I bring out warm treats, and it makes it all worth it.

I don't have a Naomi yet, but we'll be getting hatching eggs in the spring and I'll be in need of names. Do you ever post on the BackyardChicken forum? I won 2nd place in the Thanksgiving photo contest and am getting BBS orpington eggs as a prize. I've never hatched before, so it should be interesting.

Cindy, I used to be quite addicted to BYC and I still pop in occasionally as BearSwampChick. Now I'm even more addicted to blogging and that takes up most of my computer time. I love it and never would have dreamed that I would get this much enjoyment out of writing. And I love making new friends who are sooooo talented in their writing and photography (that includes you, my dear).

It makes me happy to know that I nudged you back into frequent posting on your blog. You're very talented and have interesting things to say to us fellow bloggers.

I will definitely check out your Thanksgiving photo on BYC today! Congrats!

hi - love the pictures...and your hen is so beautiful, is that Ravin or wynonna? my husband might have to do a painting of her.

I fed our chickens oatmeal (like you did) and they loved it...rhoda is such a pig though, she ate most of it.

Thanks Juicy! That big hen is Wynonna (the wyandotte). Let me know if your hubby wants me to email him a larger size file of the photo for reference.

cindy - yes, please send over a larger size. Do you have my email? bruceandalisa@gmail.com
So, I fed my kids some warm oatmeal, can you give me some other tips for snacks...tried brocolli, but they didn't like it. You mentioned cracked corn, do you get that at a feed shop?

Alisa, I'll send you a larger photo file tomorrow when I'm at my main computer. Does your hubby want the pic of Wynonna only or one with Raven and Wynonna?

You can purchase cracked corn at most feed stores or even a backyard bird shop. It's like candy for chickens, so you want to give it kinda sparingly. Some other good treats are lettuce, tomatoes, squash (mine have been eating their way through a pumpkin since last month), strawberries, yogurt, bread (they always get the heals of bread that get left in the package).
